Three steps from ZIP code to your rate
There's a short set of questions in the middle, and it's worth it: insurers can't show you a real price without knowing a little about your car and the people driving it.

Compare and get your rate
See insurers in your area that fit your answers. Tap one to get your price on their site, then decide. The list is sponsored, so the order can be affected by what insurers pay.
What you'll want to know before you start
No documents needed. Having these in your head makes the questions go faster and your quotes more accurate.
- Your car's year, make and model
- Birth dates of everyone who drives it
- Who insures you now, if anyone
- Any accidents or tickets in the last few years
Why compare instead of just renewing
Insurers change their prices all the time, and they don't let you know when a competitor would charge less. Comparing is the only way to find out, and it doesn't cost you anything.
Drivers who compare often save hundreds a year. Some find their current rate is already good.
Same driver, very different prices
Each insurer weighs your age, car, record and ZIP in its own way. Quotes for identical coverage can be hundreds of dollars apart, so the insurer that's cheapest for a friend may not be cheapest for you.
Renewals tend to creep up
Premiums often rise at renewal even when you haven't had a claim or a ticket. A quick comparison tells you whether the new price is still fair.
One set of questions, not five quote forms
Answer once and compare insurers that cover your area, instead of retyping your details on every insurer's site.
Free, and nothing is decided for you
Insurers pay us, not you. No fees, no account, no obligation. If your current policy is the best deal, keep it.
Drivers who compared with us
Real situations: renewals that jumped, new teen drivers, a cross-state move, and one driver who found out he was already paying a fair price.
Same car, no tickets, nothing changed, and my six-month premium still went up $94. The questions took about as long as a commercial break. The second insurer I clicked on came in lower than what I was paying before the increase, so I switched that night.
Tasha W. · Dayton, OH
Questions were easy and the list came up right after. Taking a star off because the insurer's site asked me for a couple of things I'd already answered. Still saving about $38 a month on the truck, so I'm not complaining much.
Gary L. · Mesa, AZ
We added our 17-year-old and the number from our current company made me want to sit down. Compared here and found a policy that's still expensive (teen driver, there's no way around it) but about $1,100 a year less than what we were quoted.
Priya N. · Edison, NJ
Does what it says. Nothing beat what I already pay, so I stayed put. At least now I know my rate is fair, which is what I wanted to find out.
Ron D. · Tulsa, OK
Quick. Did the whole thing on my phone waiting in the school pickup line.
Melissa K. · Raleigh, NC
Moved from Boise and my old insurer doesn't write policies in Washington. This was the fastest way to see who does. I didn't expect the gap between insurers to be so big: close to $60 a month from the cheapest to the most expensive one I checked.
Jordan B. · Tacoma, WA
I was bracing for my phone to ring all week. It didn't. I clicked on two insurers, got two prices, picked the cheaper one with the same coverage.
Luis G. · San Antonio, TX
Car insurance in Michigan costs a lot whatever you do. Comparing still got me $41 a month under last year, and the insurer I picked explained my PIP options better than my old one ever did.

Each state sets its own minimum coverage, and some require extras like personal injury protection. Pick your state, then add your ZIP so we can show you insurers that sell policies there.
Car insurance questions, answered
What drivers most often ask us before they enter their ZIP.
Is DriveDownRates really free? How do you make money?
Yes, it's free to use, and it stays free whether or not you buy a policy. We're paid by the insurers and agencies in our listings when you click through to them. That's how the page stays free for you, and it's also why we tell you the list is sponsored: payment can affect which insurers appear and in what order.
Will comparing here affect my credit score?
No. We don't run a credit check, and answering our questions has no effect on your credit. In most states, an insurer may check a credit-based insurance score when you ask for a quote on their site. That's a soft inquiry: only you can see it on your credit report, and it doesn't lower your score. A few states, including California, Hawaii and Massachusetts, don't allow credit to be used in car insurance pricing at all.
Am I going to get a flood of phone calls?
Comparing on DriveDownRates doesn't sign you up for a call list. You choose which insurers to click through to, and your details go only to the ones you pick. If you then request a quote from an insurer and give them your phone number, they may call you about that quote, and their own privacy policy applies from that point. You stay in control of who you hear from.
What will you ask me, and what should I have handy?
After your ZIP, we'll ask a few questions about your car (year, make and model), how you use it, whether you're insured right now, and the drivers in your household, including any recent accidents or tickets. You can answer it all from memory; you won't need your VIN or your current policy. Most people are done in about two minutes.
Why do car insurance prices change from one ZIP code to the next?
Insurers price based on the claims they see in an area. ZIPs with heavier traffic, more accidents, more car theft, higher repair and medical bills, or more hail and flooding cost more to insure, even for a driver with a clean record. State rules matter too, because required coverage differs from state to state. That's why moving across town, or across a state line, can change your price noticeably.
How do quotes work once I pick an insurer?
When you tap an insurer in your list, you'll go to their site to see your price for the coverage you choose. That price can still change before you buy, because insurers check your driving record and claims history and confirm details like your car's VIN before they finalize a policy. Checking two or three insurers gives you a realistic range, not just one number.
Which insurers will I see? Is every insurer included?
You'll see top-rated insurers and agencies that sell car insurance in your ZIP and that fit your answers. Not every insurer in the market is in our listings, and the ones shown pay us when you click, which can affect the order. Because of that, we always suggest comparing more than one before you decide.
Do I have to buy anything?
No. There's no obligation at any step. If nothing beats your current policy, close the tab and keep what you have. You'll still know your rate is competitive, which is worth knowing before your next renewal.
How often should I compare car insurance?
At least once a year, ideally a few weeks before your policy renews. It's also worth checking after anything that changes how insurers see you: moving, buying a different car, adding a teen driver, getting married, turning 25, or when an old ticket or accident drops off your record, usually after three to five years.
If I switch, how do I avoid a gap in coverage?
Buy the new policy first and set its start date, then cancel your old one effective that same day. Most insurers refund the unused part of a prepaid premium, though some charge a small cancellation fee. Don't just stop paying the old policy: a lapse can raise your future rates and, in most states, cause problems with your registration.
Your renewal price isn't the only price out there
Most drivers haven't compared in years. Take a couple of minutes to see what insurers near you would charge. It's free and you're not committing to anything.
